Tennell Lockett, a founding partner of Townsend & Lockett, LLC, focuses his practice on patent, trademark and copyright matters, including all aspects of complex intellectual property litigation and intellectual property and technology licensing. Tennell also has significant experience in handling trade secret cases and has secured numerous trademark, service mark and copyright registrations for clients of varying industries and brands.  Tennell has handled numerous national and international domain name and Internet matters.

Prior to forming Townsend & Lockett, LLC, Tennell practiced law at Alston & Bird, LLP in its Intellectual Property group.  While there, Tennell serviced both large and small clients in complex patent infringement cases, ranging from representations of Fortune 500 and Fortune Global 500 companies to sole inventors.  Tennell also gained years of trademark experience, managing large trademark portfolios for numerous companies with nationally- and internationally-recognized trade and service marks.  Tennell’s litigation expertise includes considerable trial experience, including multiple high-profiled victories for one of the country’s largest companies in the wireless cellular telephone industry.  In addition to his litigation practice, Tennell gained significant experience in intellectual property and technology licensing while at Alston & Bird.

From 2002-2008, Tennell sat on the board of the African-American Association of Georgia, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.  Tennell has been published in Alston & Bird’s Federal Circuit Annual Review (Aspen Publishers) and the IP Links, the official newsletter for the North Carolina Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section.  Tennell also serves as a youth leader at Bethel Family Church.

At U.C. Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) Tennell served as a staff editor for the African-American Law and Policy Report and served as vice president of recruitment for the Law Students of African Descent (LSAD). Tennell is a member of the Atlanta Bar Association (Intellectual Property Section) and has previously been admitted pro hac vice to the State Bars of Alabama, Texas and South Carolina

Recent Representations

  • Within the past 3 years, won multiple trials in complex patent litigation cases for one of the world’s largest wireless handset manufacturers.
  • Conduct technology license review, analysis and advisement for large Southeast aquarium.
  • Successfully represented several Fortune 500 and Fortune Global 500 companies in complex patent infringement litigation and national and international trademark enforcement matters.
  • Review, analyze and draft technology and IP license agreements for small and large companies.
  • Successfully represented local Atlanta-based business in multi-million dollar trade secret case.
  • Prevailed on summary judgment in complex patent infringement suit involving electronic financial transaction systems technologies on behalf of large financial service provider, resulting in favorable settlement.
  • Managed large international trademark portfolios for a number of companies, including a large NY-based fashion retailer, an online medical service provider, a financial services company and an online travel service.
  • Successfully represented clients in various arbitration proceedings before the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS) and proceedings pursuant to the Uniform Domain Name Resolution Policy (UDRP) and the Start-up Trademark Opposition Policy (STOP).
